AMP is not just for News anymore as Ebay incorporates the technology to increase the speed for its mobile users.

AMP or the Accelerated Mobile Pages Project just received a big vote of confidence from the massive online retailer Ebay, who have now enabled large parts of their website to be accessible using the AMP protocol. This will allow mobile users to get blistering fast access to the site’s product pages.

The AMP project was always intended for a wide variety of contents, however it was the News content that took advantage of AMP right from the start. Google’s News Feed now boasts the AMP carousel at the top of the feed showing the latest articles that conform to AMP.

Being at the top of the feed promises to be a huge advantage for News Agencies who become early adopters of the standard. But how does this apply to business websites and online shops who don’t feature on Google’s News Feed?

It’s important to understand why AMP has come about. It is to provide a better user experience for mobile users who don’t want to wait for a slow loading page on their mobile phone. Watch the first one minute of this video to get an idea of how users feel when they come across a slow page.

AMP is not a ranking factor on Google (yet) but if your business site or online shop makes use of the protocol, you could start seeing a lower bounce rate for mobile users. And a lower bounce rate means better user experience and better user experience means a better Google Ranking.

Because these pages provide a faster loading experience for the users and are therefore less likely to generate a bounce (user leaves without waiting for page to load), Ebay will be hoping that Google sends more mobile traffic to their product pages.
